Postgraduate Degrees in Sociology

General Introduction

Candidate must have satisfactorily completed the course work and guided research study approved by the Supervisory Committee. A minimum number of 25 credit units is required for the MSc and 45 for the PhD including credit units for seminar and research.

Research study and Thesis/Dissertation Presentation: Candidates must have satisfactorily completed the course work and guided research study approved by the Supervisory Committee to be externally defended it. Master's degree candidates will be required to complete 6-12 credit units of research while candidates are to offer24credit units (6cu/semester) of research.

Seminar: Each postgraduate student is to make a proposal defense and one seminar each semester (1 credit unit/semester) for the duration of his/her study.

I. Masters in Law Enforcement and Criminal Justice (MLCJ) Programme

Duration: 1 year, runs during weekends (Friday and Saturday)

Entry or Admission Requirements:

MApplicants must hold a minimum of a 2nd class Bachelors degree from a recognized University with at least 2 years relevant working experience. Hold a 3rd class Bachelors degree with a minimum of 5 years relevant working experience.

Objectives of the Programme

To provide relevant and appropriate sociological and criminological training at post graduate level for the operators of law enforcement and administrators of justice.

To aid and encourage every law/security personnel to see his/her particular specialized role as only a part of the larger machinery responsible for the administration of criminal justice.

To establish the needed reciprocity between theory and practice in the area of crime prevention, control and correction in Nigerian context.

To further the relationship between the University and its community in pursuance of the services of the former to the latter.

II. Postgraduate Diploma in Police Administration and Security Management (PGDPASM)

Entry or Admission Requirements:

Participants must be holders of a bachelor’s degree from a recognized University with a minimum of Third class or HND with a minimum of Lower credit from a recognized Polytechnic and all candidates must have 5 credits including English Language a minimum of pass in Maths.

Graduation Requirements:

Participants in Postgraduate Diploma in Police Administration and Security Management (PGDPASM) are required to earn a minimum of 24 Credits Units for graduation.

III. M.SC. Sociology Programme

Duration: M.Sc. Sociology is a twenty-four month programme of study, comprising of one year residency programme in which students are expected to undergo course work and proposal writing requirements. While the M.Sc. Sociology full time degree programme of study is required to be completed in a period of 24 calendar months, students may convert to part-time programme of study after completing the one year residency programmes of course work. The part-time equivalent of their time remaining will be computed and made known to them by the Departmental Postgraduate Studies Coordinator when approved by the Postgraduate School.

Entry or Admission Requirements:

B.Sc. Sociology with a minimum of Second Class Lower Division honours degree with a minimum Cumulative Grade Point of Average (CGPA) of 3.00, obtained from a recognized University.

The M.Sc. Sociology programme builds on the foundations laid at the undergraduate and other lower levels of study as applicable to individual students. The structure of courses and their contents expose students to the logic and scientific basis of social research, theory construction and the state of the art in every candidate’s chosen area of specialization. All registered students are expected to take elective courses in related disciplines in the Department or other Departments of the University. The choice of courses to be taken must be discussed with the Academic Advisers/Supervisors. Each candidate is required to write a thesis that will be internally and externally examined and orally defended.

IV. Ph.D Sociology Programme

Duration: 3 years

Entry or Admission Requirements:

A candidate is required to have M.Sc. Sociology from a recognized university.
