Postgraduate Courses

General Introduction

Candidate must have satisfactorily completed the course work and guided research study approved by the Supervisory Committee. A minimum number of 25 credit units is required for the MSc and 45 for the PhD including credit units for seminar and research.

Research study and Thesis/Dissertation Presentation: Candidates must have satisfactorily completed the course work and guided research study approved by the Supervisory Committee to be externally defended it. Master's degree candidates will be required to complete 6-12 credit units of research while candidates are to offer 24credit units (6cu/semester) of research.

Seminar: Each postgraduate student is to make a proposal defense and one seminar each semester (1 credit unit/semester) for the duration of his/her study.

Graduation Requirement

All Postgraduate programmes in the department have course work component and project work/dissertation/thesis component. For the course work, each candidate is expected to pass all prescribed written examinations before proceeding with his/her project work/dissertation/thesis. Thus, course work is examined and graded as mandatory at both Master’s and Doctoral level.

At Doctoral level, a minimum workload of 45 credit units (inclusive of the credit units earned at the master’s level) must be earned. This shall exclude 4-10 credit units for seminar. The total credit units for thesis is 24 credit units.At Master’s degree, a minimum of 30 credit units must be earned excluding 3-6 for seminar. The total credit unit for dissertation is 12 credit units.At Postgraduate Diploma Level, a minimum of 24 credit units must be earned. Final project carries a total of 6 credit units.

At Professional Masters level, a candidate is required to earn a total of 33 credit units including a practical project to qualify for the award of Master in Journalism (MIJ) or Master in Strategic Communucation (MISC) Degree.

Master of Science (M.Sc) or Master of Art (M.A) in Mass Communication from ABU., or any recognized university (with a minimum of 4.00 CGPA), B.Sc. or B.A (with a minimum of 3.50 CGPA) in Mass Communication from ABU or any recognized university, plus five ‘O’Level Credit in English Language, Mathematics, Government/History/Civic Education, Economics/Commerce/Financial Accounting, any Nigerian Language, and CRS/IRS.
