History of the Department

The department of Mass Communication was conceived in 1976 but took off in 1992/93 following the approval by the National University Commission (NUC) of an academic programme leading to a B.Sc. degree in Mass Communication. The department admitted the first set of students in 1992 and sent out the first set of graduates in 1998. One of the objectives of the department is to fill the yawning needs of the media and communication houses in the North, Nigeria and the world in general. The field of communication is fast changing; hence it has become imperative for the department to continue to review its plan, strategy and curricula to adapt to ever changing developments in communication technology. This will make the department and its products relevant as far as societal demands and global developments require.

Mission

a) The mission which the department sets out to fulfill are to:

(i) Capacitate and train our products with the knowledge to function adequately in the total information and communication society of the world.

(ii) Build an established institution where practitioners capable of handling crisis resolution and task of unifying the country are trained.

(iii) Provide theoretical, practical and professional training towards self-employment and independence for mass communication graduates.

(iv) Be one of the few Nigerian Universities offering postgraduate programmes in the New Communication Technology and Telecommunications.

b) In accordance with the above, the existence of the department is to fulfill a need felt by the immediate social environment where the university is located, particularly for professionals in the area of mass media. Thus, efforts shall be geared towards:

(i) The production of graduates that can easily function in the mass media organizations in and around the immediate social environment.

(ii) The satisfying of societal quest for effective information.

Vision

The mass communication field and the movement of the department into relevance in the scheme of society.

(ii) Enhanced capacity of our products as part of the total information and communication explosion/revolutions in the world.


Programme Philosophy

The philosophy and values that are important to the department are:

(a) Academic Excellence:

(i) In the quality of output i.e., the ability of our students to perform academically with recognition and distinction among their peers in and outside the country.

(ii) On the part of good performance from the students and quality research from the academic staff.

(iii) The ability of both students and staff to know and uphold what is right, abhor wrong doings.

(iv) Imbibing the principles of fairness, transparency, courage and the ability to co-exist with others.

(v) Espousing critical thinking and scholarly disposition.

(b) Professionalism:

(i) Giving proper training and inculcating the ethics of the profession in the students.

(ii) To strive to be relevant in the pursuance and realization of societal needs through the study and practice of mass communication.

(iii) Respect and promotion of indigenous culture and the accommodation of cherished traditional values in the society.
